Killable Children New Vegas

Fallout New Vegas Mod Help? I installed a killable children mod so I could fully eliminate Caesar's Legion without some invincible kids running around, and now that I have the child killer.

Fallout 3’s “Killable Children” mod was released in 2008, and since then, it’s been downloaded over 150,000 times by PC players. It’s probably no surprise this relatively popular type of mod made a comeback with Fallout 4, too, right?

OK, maybe this seems weird to some of y’all. But, this type of mod has a very specific history within a segment of the Fallout fandom. Back when Fallout 3 was released, there was some drama surrounding children in that game. Older Fallout games let players murder kids if they so pleased, and there was even an associated negative reputation that players could earn for doing so.Fallout 3 left that “feature” out of the game, though, and this was a move by Bethesda that some hardcore players really disliked.

Why would anyone want to kill kids in the first place, though? There are a few things going on here, judging from the comments people have left on the “Killable Children” mod page for Fallout 4. There are players that consider killing children a part of Fallout tradition. Other players like this mod on principle, because it represents a political ideology. Perhaps they have no intention of using it, really, but they still want it to exist because they see it as a blow against so-called politically correct culture. Then you’ve got players who see invincible children as a nonsensical feature in certain contexts the game itself sets up. Typically, these players think invincible children is ‘immersion breaking.’ You’ve also got players who don’t think the mod goes far enough. And finally, there are players who just..dislike certain characters, or intend on playing Fallout 4 as a serial killer of sorts.

Here’s some of what people have said about this mod. Bolded emphasis mine.

OH yes !!! thanks you so much for this mod, I can’t wait for someone making an “alternative start” to this garbage so I can role play like in a real Fallout game, remember the good old times when you can have and sell slaves and blow up entire towns or just be whatever you want? ..the truly form of the wasteland and not this crappy “ Disney” version. I can’t wait for the new Creation Kit !

I HATE this politically-correctness limitation of “no killing children on-screen”

3 days and yet this mod could not be more needed

Thank you for this. During the “Battle for Bunker Hill” quest, one of the children NPCs named ‘Meg’ would not die from the Synths (I sided with the Institute). So at the end of the battle, Meg was cowering in a shack while the Synths unloaded thousands of rounds of plasma, laser and machine gun ammo that just went right through her..

Nice mod, will there be a version with full gore?

Fallout is a game designed with a ton of story, character development, and a lot of small details all made to draw the player into the world. Fallout is also set in a post apocalyptic world where you have rampant murder and people stealing babies from their mothers before executing said mother. It is a world where most people, whether by choice or to survive, have thrown out their cares for their fellow man. That is the setting. That is the story we want to see when we delve into Fallout. If you look at how terrible the world is today, would not a post apocalyptic one have people committing more heinous actions? You would see children shooting people, and people shooting back. Abuse of all kinds would be present, sexual or otherwise. An immersive setting is created both by what is in it and what ISN’T in it. How immersion breaking is it when I see (and this actually happened in my FO4) 3 deathclaws surrounding a kid hitting him while he flees, and give absolutely no shits? The kid is apparently a god anyway. Terrible. Moments like that should be gutwrenching, seeing something like a kid torn to shreds by deathclaws, a reminder of how harsh the wasteland would actually be. It could be a moment that immerses the player further, but instead does the absolute opposite. And hey, some people want to play the mass murderer in their video game. Who are we to judge? In such cases, killing an entire town’s grown ups and being forced to leave the children alive makes absolutely no sense either.

Obviously, not everyone is in favor of a mod like this. While most people posting at Nexus like the idea of the mod, at least a couple of people are pushing back and debating its existence in the comments:

Why can’t nude and killable mods just stay for adult men and women. Seriously what do you get out of killing a child in a video game? I can’t wrap my head around it as a parent and it seems so psychopathic.

I admire modders’ skills and dedication but this takes it too far.

None of the kids are really annoying enough in this game to kill like FO3 aka little lamplight

As a veteran Fallout player, I can’t say I miss having the ability to kill kids. Fallout’s believability as a world never hinged on killable children for me; Fallout doesn’t stop being Fallout based on whether or not I can kill children. Besides, it was pretty different back then, too! In Fallout 2, for example, kids could totally steal your precious gear, thus leaving your character totally fucked. In that context, I can understand why someone might feel murderous rage at a video game kid, especially when said children weren’t rendered realistically, as they are now. Stuff like gear stealing doesn’t happen in the modern Fallout games, though. Kids mostly exist as window dressing, or for quests.

I sympathize with the idea that invincible characters can make the game feel weird in certain contexts, too. At this point, though, I’ve filed that away as just a video-game-ass thing, you know? My companions are also invincible and can never die in combat, and that invincibility doesn’t bother me at all. It’s not something that needs “fixing” in my mind. I also just don’t play as psychotic characters who like murdering people, adults or otherwise. The people who die in my games usually deserve it in some way. I respect that some people might play the game totally differently than I do, and I wouldn’t judge anyone for that. It’s just, personally, I can’t get particularly worked up over the inability to kill children in Fallout. I’ve got a ton of gripes with the game, which I outlined in my review, but killable children is not one of them. That’s just me, though.

At the moment, Fallout 4’s “Killable Children” mod has been downloaded over 11,000 times. It’s not a particularly large part of the Fallout player base, especially in light of the millions the game has sold. Regardless, because they’ve chosen to download and install this mod, it means that one of the most controversial features of the Fallout universe continues to live on in some way.

ImmortalEdit

Since Fallout 3 likes to emulate many of the old sci-fi movies; from robots to giant ants, I wonder if that's the reason your can't kill kids in this one like you could in the other Fallout's. In old sci-fi movies men were manly, women stood and screamed waiting to be rescued and all that happened to kids was they got a few cuts and bruises, at worked they got knocked out. But a child never died in a 50's movie.Just a thought; maybe that's why they added the immortal children in fallout 3 —Preceding unsigned comment added by A Pickering (talk • contribs). Not really. Fallout 1 and 2 were also based on 1950s sci-fi. Ausir(talk) 10:48, January 2, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, but things are developing all the time. Maybe sometime between Fallout 2 and 3 someone noticed kids in the old movies are pretty immortal.--A Pickering 12:35, January 2, 2010 (UTC)

Bethesda decided to make kids unkillable because of PR. School shootings and such in America have changed what people will get in an uproar about. In addition, Fallout 3 is higher profile (and in a different public climate) game than the earlier ones were. There was a big public to-do about it. So, forget the 1950s movie connection speculation. It's all a matter of record.--Gothemasticator 12:38, January 2, 2010 (UTC)

Technical ClarificationsEdit

  • When playing as a child there will be switches and items you cannot use, you can still wear adult items but they wont morph to child anatomy (Forexample: A female child will have breasts if you wear a regular vault 101 jumpsuit instead of the child version)
  • Setpcyoung 1 will NOT turn you into a child despite what some cheat sites may say, it will turn you into a teenager (You will look and act the same you did in the quest Future Imperfect, this basically means your character will have a set hairstyle which cannot be changed, your character may also call for help if hurt, and if an enemy goes out of range your character may say 'Aah guess it was nothing', Setpcyoung 0 will restore your character to his/her adult version.

This should be included somewhere, also note it also counts if you reverse pickpocket armor to a child.77.213.191.134 22:22, March 16, 2010 (UTC)

Speed will vary depending on the CPU and HD configurations, applications used and wireless settings. 1Total amount of available memory may be less based on configuration. 2Accessible capacity varies; MB = 1 million bytes; GB = 1 billion bytes; TB = 1 trillion bytes. Speaking of 'Children cannot use this.', I got that message once..as an adult. At the end of Anchorage, I used player.setscale10 just for kicks. After I killed Jingwei, I was sitting in a gray fog, and this message popped up when I tried to move. No guesses as to why it appeared. -- Valoopy 17:31, June 7, 2011 (UTC)

Killable childrenEdit

Killable

You can still download mods that make children killable, It's some kind of funky change that involves using small adult models and other things I dont care to remember.24.224.148.96 17:54, July 20, 2010 (UTC)Kastrenzo

Actually it's just a record flag, removing the 'Child' flag from the race record makes all NPCs of that race considered adults by the game, they take damage like normal, are target-able in VATS and, unless flagged essential (such as is the case with Harden Simms), can be killed. I think you're thinking of a different mod that uses child heads with adult bodies, scaled down to child size. That mod is called Shojo and discussion of it is banned on the Bethesda official forums. Kris(talk) 18:22, July 20, 2010 (UTC)
Actually, the biggest child killer mod uses adult bodies because child bodies have improper gore caps. I think it only triggers on death, though. NittyTok. 18:25, July 20, 2010 (UTC)
The one I use (mainly to make children playable, not so much for the killing) uses custom child models with proper gore caps; but yea, the default ones don't have gore caps at all. Kris(talk) 18:32, July 20, 2010 (UTC)

New Vegas? Edit

Killable Children New Vegas

Are they to return in Fallout: New Vegas? thanks, Gheart

Fallout: New Vegas; incorrect information and possible trivia Edit

In the article, it says 'The kids running around in Freeside have the same voice, regardless of gender.' This isn't exactly true. When you first enter Freeside, you can find the group of children chasing a Giant Rat. If you follow the children, you can hear them making comments about it (like roughly, 'We're gonna eat tonight!' ectect)If you go up to the girl, she says something roughly to the likes of 'He's kinda cute, isn't he?' in an obviously female voice. Once you kill the rat, they'll say things like 'Thanks lady' - THIS is where the game seems to bug out, and the little girl ends up playing the male voice when you talk to her. I could have sworn she has said 'Thanks, lady!' to me in a female voice, but for some reason, she seems to end up taking the male voice. The giant rat seems to spawn again after a few days (not exactly sure how many, of it's only one, blahblahblah), and she seems to get her normal voice again. After I killed the rat again, she ended up repeating the same thing. (tested on the xbox 360 version) All of I have to say though, is that voice gets really irritating, and fast. Augh. XD

Also, might this be some trivia? The Freeside girl mentioned seems to wear a scaled down adult outfit; you can notice she has small breasts. I've seen something like this happen in The Sims 2 when I was downloading custom content;, I got an outfit that was originally created for teenagers, but when the person moved it to a child size, it didn't get modded properly. Figured it would make some interesting trivia, though, since most children seem to have their own unique clothing? Or if anything, clothing that's correctly sized down to child proportions. Fallout 2 Edit

I'm using the restoration patch for fallout 2 which also adds children and i gotta say that the developers must have had some serious problems. I usually punch the children in the den once so they dont steal my stuff again but the messages in the text box like: [..] the child starts to cry,[..] snapping the arm like a candy cane..WTF interplay..

GhoulsEdit

Killable Children New Vegas

Why are there no Ghoul-Children, by the way? PlaceboForte94 19:29, November 28, 2011 (UTC)

  • Ghouls can't have children, so that's why there aren't any in the game. Jspoel 19:45, November 28, 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, ghouls are steril, but what if a human child - in 2077 or whenever - mutates? PlaceboForte94 19:50, November 28, 2011 (UTC)

  • Probably in the early stages after the Great War there were ghoul children. But they grew up and after let's say the year 2150 children didn't into ghouls anymore because of the drop of radiation? Not sure. Jspoel 20:15, November 28, 2011 (UTC)
